Pristeen
"Feminine Hygiene Deodorant" ad, 1969
(Scroll down to see more
ads & items in the column at left, )
Unlike some other products (scroll
down left-hand column) designed to
kill or cover up women's genital odor,
a woman sprayed the American deodorant
Pristeen - pristine misspelled - onto
her vulva.
But, darn it, why don't ads use the word
vulva
when that's what they mean, like
below? I'll bet you the word has never
appeared in an ad in a mainstream
consumer magazine in America, but
vagina has, which is good when it's
appropriate.
Vulva
seems to have a taboo value that vagina
doesn't. Maybe it's because people
know that vaginas have a medical
function - babies and, uh, some
other stuff - but vulvas just sit
there. They're decoration. That's
the problem in America, where
decoration implies appeal. You take
it from there.
Consider this
poor "girl," below, forced to sit in
a field of flowers to make her smell
better - but they've turned brown! She killed
them - she smells that bad!! She's
not a "nice-to-be-with girl," actually
the last line in the ad (read the
third picture). She might also need a
tick spray if she doesn't leave soon!
See the odor
page for what really causes menstrual
odor - if
you dare!
The ad appeared in 1969; the
magazine is unknown.

Hey, silly, turn that
frown upside down!
Pristine will protect
you, "calmly and quietly, all day
long."
|
I love it! This is classic
American ad copy, pushing
the buttons of femininity,
genital odor, acceptability,
concealment of sexuality,
medical authority and
probably a dozen others.
