I thank the retired teacher who generously sent these tins!

Below: The outside of the top of the ca. 1936 metal box is the same size as the 1911 box:
2 3/4 x 1 3/16 x 1/4" (6.8 x 3 x 0.5 cm) . The words "Midol 10 tablets"
are in relief. The bottom is the same as the 1911 box.

Below: Inside the box. The words in the top are on a piece of paper and the
bottom is lined with black paper. Two pills remain. The box doesn't reveal
what the pills are made of although later boxes do.
This is the correct color.

Below: An enlarged pill showing MIDOL, which also graces the other side. Headache, anyone?

Below: The loose paper insert in the box measures 4 7/8 x 2 7/8" (12.2 x 7.4 cm) when opened, as shown
(it folds vertically down the center).
The nurse looks as if she needs a Midol, fast.

Below: This is the only donated box that can be dated by enclosed text.

Below: Around 1936-37 Midol made a bigger box (3 3/16 x 1 3/16", 8 x 3 cm) in response to competition
from Kurb, from Kotex, among others. The box is shown out of proportion to the one above.

Below: This bigger box (back enlarged below) also carried the ingredients of the pills, the first time among the
boxes the museum has.
http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/76/3/295 writes this about cinnamyl-ephedrine:
1. Cinnamylephedrine (d, l, and dl) is about ten times as potent a surface anesthetic as cocaine when tested by the rabbit's cornea method. Irritation occurs when concentrations of one per cent or greater are used.

2. When tested by the human intradermal wheal method, cinnamylephedrine (d, l, and dl) is about twenty times as potent as procaine. The compound is somewhat irritating and causes an erythema which persists from twelve to twenty-four hours.
