Two ads for Kotex maxi and mini menstrual pads, 1981, August and ?, Mademoiselle and unknown magazine, U.S.A.

Headings: If you almost had an "accident" in the office [or "with your maxi pad"] last month, you're not alone...

Why do you think a company would tell a person's story about an experience with a product - here, a pad? Do you find the story more believable than the company's just saying, "Buy our stuff because it's the best! And cheap!"

Sometimes you see the story in the person's handwriting as in a series of Pursettes ads, supposedly lending credibility (the Pursettes company says at the bottom of the page it has the letter on file). The Pinkham company ran into trouble when women writing for help received letters with Mrs. Pinkham's signature after she was dead.

Both New Freedom (sister of Kotex) and Stayfree (ditto to Modess) appeared about 10 years before this ad with a great advance: no belts! Belts had bothered women for decades, maybe centuries. Although women could keep pads in place by other means, belts were cheap and didn't require special underpants.
I thank a donor who wants to remain anonymous for these ads!

Below: Both ads measure about 8 x 11" (20.3 x 27.9 cm). August, 1981, Mademoiselle magazine.
Below: 1981, month and magazine unknown.
