Kotex ad, U.S.A., 1922
Kotex ads, like most ads, were much
wordier in the 1920s and 1930s. In
this case (15 November 1922), in the
second year of the company's
advertising, it treats the invention
of the word Kotex - COTton-like TEXure
- as the key to embarrassment-free
shopping.
Actually, it didn't work. Not until
Albert Lasker,
the founding genius of modern
American advertising, told
stores to place
the boxes on the counter, and put a
coin box next to them (see), did Kotex
sales really grow. Customers seem to
have been less likely to steal in that
era.
