Ad for Always Slender for Teens menstrual pads
4 consecutive pages, September 1987 (page 1)
Seventeen magazine, U.S.A

Are these ads expensive? Four pages? They must be in this very competitive industry. And for small patties of absorbent material!

This museum has a Tampax memo showing how much a competitor, Pursettes, spent on advertising in this very magazine but that was almost 25 years before the ads below.

Other menstrual products companies have bought several consecutive pages of advertising but it's rare.

Seducing the reader with heart-warming stories is not rare. At least the company affixed its logo to the first page and put ADVERTISEMENT in the top right corner so the reader would know it's not editorial text.

But the stories don't have to be heart warming. Carefree seduced a German audience with a dense technical text that only announced its commercial tie halfway through the second of two pages; the first page was clearer. Who in the world had time to read it?

Directing teens to certain products is not new, of course. Booklets and pantypads have sought out that ever-increasing market in the knowledge that girls starting out with one company will often stay with that company until menopause.

Below: Click on the page of the 4 consecutive-page ad you want to see.
Each page measures 8 1/8 x 10 7/8" (20.6 x 10.88 cm).
