Daints menstrual tampons
(1930s? U.S.A.)

Procter & Gamble kindly donated the boxes and contents as part of a gift of scores of menstrual products.

Below: The absorbent part of the tampon - the plug - measures about 2.25 x 0.75" (about 6 x 2.1 cm);
the string extends 4" (about 9 cm). Cellophane holds two tampons; each box contains six 'pons
although two were missing when P&G sent it to me.

The strings were inside the wrapping, below.
But one string penetrated the wrapper in the second bundle, below, showing a certain sloppiness.

Below: The uterus end of the first bundle.
Below: At right, the string curls around the end of one of the tampons in the first bundle.

Below: One of the tampons. The string coils around the right end. A woman would have to uncoil it before using.
The arrow shows the string at one end.
 The other end of the same tampon.

Below: The string of the left-hand tampon was stuck so firmly against
the plug that I was convinced it threaded back into the 'pon. Later it popped
loose when I tugged hard. A bad experience if you're sitting on a public
toilet - or anywhere, actually. The string at right was free without a struggle.
I couldn't figure out what the grooves were for or the result of. A menstrual mystery!
