MUM Board Member Donates Rare Menstrual Cup to This Museum

Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at the New York University Medical Center and a board member of MUM, gave the museum a Tassette menstrual cup, which women could buy in the U.S.A. in the early 1960s. Because of its rarity, I thought I would never see the cup, just as I thought I would never see the Tassaway cup, its successor; Dr. Tierno donated several Tassaways to MUM last year. Your MUM is deeply grateful to Dr. Tierno!

In the next several months you can read more information about menstrual cups in a new section on this site. MUM now has the last four cups produced in the U.S.A., lacking only the original commercial cup produced in the late 1930s.

I believe Chinese women now can use a cup made in their country, and I heard a rumor about a cup a Canadian hospital is testing. Anyone know anything??

In the near future I will add information about the failed Australian menstrual cup, which the developer is apparently trying to market elsewhere.

And of course there is the old standby, maybe the first patent for a cup in the U.S.A., the catamenial sack from 1867.

Natural Choice Sells Cotton Pads, Cotton Tampons, Tea, Extracts and Belly Bliss Cream!

A California company, Natural Choice, sent me a brochure last week with a wide variety of menstrual products. No, you're going to have to call them at 707-926-5155 or write P.O.
